What is a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is sometimes required for documents to be used in countries where a sworn translation system is in place. A sworn translation is a translation carried out by a qualified sworn translator and is valid for official use in that country. It will usually include a sworn statement that the translation is accurate and also the details of the sworn translator.
If the country does not have a sworn translation system in place, then often a notarised and/or apostilled translation will be required. See Legalised Translations.
Some countries that have a sworn translation system in place:
- Spain
- Italy
- France
- Belgium
- Germany
- Greece
- Austria
- Poland
Cost of sworn translation
Our sworn translations start from 70 GBP and usually can be done within three to four business days. We can work from high-quality scans, in most cases, but please ensure all markings and stamps are clear within these scans.
What exactly is a sworn translator?
A sworn translator is a translator who has been licensed by an official governing body in the country of the target language and whose seal and/or signature confirms the validity of a document not issued in that country. All translations carried out by a sworn translator hold official status before legal authorities and public bodies.
The governing bodies for sworn translators vary from country to country. To give you an idea, here are a few examples:
Spain - sworn translators are licensed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
France - sworn translators are governed by the Courts of France.
Italy - it is a bit different in Italy in that the translator does the translation, and then goes in person to the court and swears that the translation is true and accurate.
Germany – the sworn translators there are also known as “state certified translators” and are licensed by a local court.
More about sworn translation services
Many of our customers will use the terms certified, sworn, legalised, legal, notarised etc. interchangeably. It is important to know the difference between all these types of official translation. Sometimes we can assist you with establishing what type of official translation you need, while other times it will be necessary for you to enquire with the legal entity to which you will be presenting the translation. Sworn translations are specific to certain countries. Otherwise, as mentioned, you will need a certified or legalised translation, depending on the country’s requirements and regulations.
