More about the Hungarian Language
History of Hungarian
Hungarian, unlike Czech and Slovak, is a non-Indo-European language. It is one of the 24 official languages within the EU and is the main language of Hungary. Hungarian became properly standardised in the 20th century, but in the 18th century a type of language renewal was carried out. Words from many languages can be found in Hungarian, such as French, German, Italian and Turkish.
Native Speakers
There are approximately 13 million speakers of Hungarian today, almost 10 million of those being from Hungary itself. The rest are spread out over numerous countries such as Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine.
Hungarian Writing
Hungarian has 44 letters in its alphabet and it is based on the Roman alphabet. The letters Q, W, X and Y only really show up in foreign words and make up part of what is known as the greater Hungarian alphabet. Without these letters, it is simply called the smaller Hungarian alphabet. The Hungarian language is known for its extensive use of agglutination i.e. the joining of morphemes.
